Symposium on Maori & Indigenous Screen Production

4 December 2010 - 5 December 2010

A TRIBUTE FOR MERATA MITA
This Symposium originated from Merata Mita, who wanted to host an event that would bring together Māori and other indigenous film-makers to reflect on our journeys and share our work.

With the passing of Merata on Monday 31st May 2010, the Organising Committee decided that the Symposium should go ahead, and would be a tribute to Merata and those other staunch advocates for Māori story-telling through moving images, including Tungia Baker, Tama Poata, Wi Kuki Kaa, Don Selwyn and Barry Barclay. Without the passion, commitment and drive of these people, the Māori and New Zealand screen industry would be poorer.

The primary purpose of the Symposium is to critically reflect on the journey of indigenous screen production, which includes all activities associated with the inception, production and distribution of moving images for the entire range of screens. The Symposium will highlight the role that Māori and other indigenous storytellers, political activists, industry leaders, educators and academics have played in shaping, influencing and nurturing its development.
