Most of us have seen or taken part in interactive art, augmented reality, or perhaps used gestures and movement to interact with a computer in a fun situation. But what is the language of gesture and interaction? How do we go from acting like a fool in front of a big screen to doing something constructive, fun and purposeful? How does a computer present information in a way that is intuitive and easy for the human to understand and how does it then interpret the gestures and responses to allow a natural and easy conversation to achieve a mutual goal? At this workshop, we will look at some of the interactive 3D technologies available, how they work, and potential applications in art and design, as well as taking a look at perception, cognition and interactivity from the human perspective. We will round this off with a group discussion about useful application areas, focusing especially on that language of interactivity and how we can explore this for design, artistic and information analysis.
